ACADEMIC YEAR

The Upward Bound Program at the University of California, Berkeley is a federally funded education program for high school students from disadvantaged and/or low-income families (as defined by the federal income guidelines).

The program is designed to motivate and prepare students with academic potential for success in education beyond high school.  Students accepted into the program receive our services free, but are expected to make a serious commitment to both their academic education and the Upward Bound Program.

Once admitted to the University of California at Berkeley Upward Bound Program, students remain in the program through high school graduation.  Activities are scheduled for students on a year round basis.

Students attend Saturday College three Saturdays of each month.  Saturday College provides opportunities for building basic skills, maintaining school course work, and obtaining academic enrichment.  Activities include career workshops, English and math mini-courses, SAT preparation, and tutoring.

During the week, Upward Bound counselors provide academic, career and personal counseling.  They visit school sites once a week to maintain contact with students, their teachers and counselor, and to keep track of school attendance and grades.

Upward Bound counselors work closely with students during their senior year to assist them in selecting colleges, applying for college admissions, housing and financial aid.

Tutoring is also provided on weekday afternoons at the request of students; however, students receiving a C or lower in academic subjects are required to attend tutoring appointments until their grades improve.
